Synesthesia Leftovers
Previous: Flashbulbs And Futures Leftovers (2009) > Jump To Current Lyrics > Next: Bloodhounds Leftovers (2014)
The one good thing about rushing out Synesthesia is that it created fewer leftovers to sift through.
Even so, it was a frustrating experience for me. While taking up less time, one thing became obvious as I went through everything: If these lyrics had been developed a bit more, the grouping would’ve been a lot better.
As a result, most material ranges from poor to frustratingly incomplete. There were many clever ideas but in my haste to rush through everything, a lot weren’t focused on and fleshed out. Heck, a few things actually left me smacking my head because I didn’t finish them.
Despite that, here are four that turned out really well and still didn’t make it for whatever reason. All That Remains is something I don’t remember writing, while Digging Out Our Graves and Sinking In probably should’ve made it onto Synesthesia proper. Lifeboats is also a favourite, but the melody was totally ripped off from a song I was really into at the time. (No, I’m not telling you what it was either.)
I know U2 often says they regret not finishing Pop before it came out. Sometimes I feel the exact same way about Synesthesia. Who knows though? Maybe I’ll revisit it someday.

All That Remains
When I stare at myself, I can never stand still
That ain’t me looking back, it’s just an image I’ve killed
Yeah to get to the cancer that clouds all my answers again
My crisis of conscience only trails up in smoke
I look hard for a roadway that’ll lead me back home
But I Choke on the meaningless, swallow my ignorance whole
How did I manage to lose?
No control over lines I’ve confused
With every word fading, I try to proceed
Without knowing the questions, as I fall to my knees
Yeah since nobody sees it, I try to believe it’s all free
Behind my two eyes, I still feel so ashamed
Like there’s so much to pay for with so little to gain
But I smile apprehensively, hoping these thoughts go away
Well maybe we’re one in the same
No control over all that remains
When I stare at myself, it ain’t me looking back
Yeah it’s never that easy but I guess I’m intact
As I’m wandering shaken, still taking up all that remains
Digging Out Our Graves
Everyone here knows better than us
But what’s to expect when it isn’t discussed?
You can always find answers if you look hard enough
So concentrate steady to call on their bluffs
If it’s really that easy for people to see
Then why can’t these things be as easy for me?
Questions to ponder while the silence remains
I’d stand up for answers but instead I’ll refrain
Silent words keep focusing
On the things we couldn’t save
Holding on to nothing less
While we’re digging out our graves
No one confesses what’s left on their minds
It’s just a trap door we keep struggling to find
Latching on tightly to the edge of our seats
Hoping to God that the past won’t repeat
Meet the future coming through
Let’s go out with faith renewed
Misconstrued, the prize that lies beneath
Silent words keep focusing
On the things we couldn’t save
Holding on to nothing less
While we’re digging out our graves
We’re still digging out our graves
Beneath the dirt we’re all the same
All equals in our own mistakes
Never once to be explained again
With Instances where we’d stand proud
High horses riding on the grounds
Pretty soon they’ll shut you up instead
Coming back to meet you when you’re dead
Sinking In
Don’t tell me what I’m supposed to be
When my patience wears so thin
We’re always just obsessed to tears
As the selfishness creeps in
With nothing all that sacred here
While each vacancy comes clean
In the shadow of our future lives
We’re distorted and obscene
If you really had a question you should ask it
No excuses for the things we should’ve been
The truth will always make an awful racket
But in your eyes it’s always sinking in
Don’t waste your time on fake goodbyes
When there’s still so much to say
With new desires to be defined
You can watch them rot away
Now everything that lingers on
It won’t stop where we begin
While in your mind these harder times
Were only offers you’d rescind
If you really had a question you should ask it
No excuses for the things we should’ve been
The truth will always make an awful racket
But in your eyes it’s always sinking in
In your eyes it’s always sinking in
It’s always such a tragedy
One that’s never in your head
Is it something that I said?
Is it something that I said?
If you really had a question you should ask it
No excuses for the things we should’ve been
The truth will always make an awful racket
But in your eyes it’s always sinking in
In your eyes it’s always sinking in
It’s always such a tragedy
One that’s never in your head
But that isn’t what I said
No it isn’t what I said
Lifeboats
The captain sounds the siren
There’s disaster up ahead
Well it’s not what I expected
But there’s a shipwreck ’round the bend
Preparing for the waters
It’s still freezing here you know
With a final prayer for courage
Easing down and off they go
You pray to God that somebody will find you
Fate in hand, the lucky few remind you
Shoot a flare into the skies
A flash of light to catch my eyes
Send a lifeboat out or drop a rope
Well sometime soon there’s bound to be
A rescue for some company
Leading us to find a way back home
This ship is slowly sinking
But there’s choices left to make
We could stop and watch in terror
Or just swim from our mistakes
You pray to God that someone will remind you
Fate in hand, the future always finds you
Shoot a flare into the skies
A flash of light to catch my eyes
Send a lifeboat out or drop a rope
Well sometime soon there’s bound to be
A rescue for some company
Leading us to find a way back home
So we hope, so we hope
You were always there in the horizon
Blinded and I tried my best to see
Nothing’s there to search for right behind us
To greet the waves that carry us and everything we’ll be
Shoot a flare into the skies
A flash of light to catch my eyes
Send a lifeboat out or drop some rope
Moving from this sinking ship
Some promises that trace our lips
No one wants to make it out alone
Well sometime soon there’s bound to be
A rescue for some company
Leading us to find a way back home
In every space we have a dream
As futile as it all may seem
Nothing else could keep our lives afloat
So we hope, so we hope
So we hope, so we hope
So we hope, so we hope
So we hope, so we hope
