I worked on Black Squirrel pretty extensively again this morning.
In the spirit of yesterday’s post, I thought I’d continue to document my work in progress. As evidenced below, I wasn’t kidding when writing that the first draft could change quite substantially. Now verses have an entirely different structure and some chorus lyrics have been tweaked slightly.
This will probably be the last edit I share publicly. Since there’s only part of the second verse to go, it’ll just be a matter of picking apart what’s there afterwards. In the interest of leaving a bit of intrigue until its official release, I don’t want to go beyond this version.
Anyway, enjoy!
Beyond these baron trees
Where there’s nothing left to grieve
Unsure of how our future evolves
I’ll be nursing my disease
I don’t wanna stay,, nothing changes anyway
I think that I’ll be better off now, I think the sun is coming around
High on a limb, snow on the ground
Taking its time, a black squirrel comes down
Enveloped in darkness to feed off the light
It’s not how you live, it’s in what you can use to survive
verse
I don’t wanna stay,, seasons changing anyway
I think that I’ll be moving on now, I think the sun is calling me out
High on a limb, snow on the ground
Taking its time, a black squirrel comes down
Enveloped in darkness to feed off the light
It’s not how you live, it’s in what you can use to survive
Right now your heartbeat isn’t coming through
But maybe someday I can trace it back to you
Though Nothing much makes sense
I’m climbing out again
Honestly, there’s not much else to do
High on a limb, snow on the ground
Taking its time, a black squirrel comes down
Enveloped in darkness to feed off the light
It’s not how you live, it’s in what you can use to survive
Once drifting in silence
We’ve made an escape
With distances growing
They mirror each day
Our lives move in cycles
It’s hard to explain
We’ll crawl through the winter
To finally resurface again
We’ll finally resurface again
Finally resurface again
