Another new thing here that has nothing to do with the upcoming Diurnal release on September 30.
I was doing some work on the seasonal release concept this morning and just finished this. Initially in contention for autumn, it really doesn’t fit the theme I’m going for now. Still, the overall vibe and writing style is indicative of what that group will look like as a whole. As a result, I decided to share it here as a sample of what people can probably expect.
Frontlines was conceived last winter at the tail end of Diurnal’s writing sessions. Since I wasn’t satisfied and it didn’t fit there either, the lyrics got set aside though. It wasn’t until getting lumped into the autumn grouping as part of the seasonal release idea that they were revisited. Still, the entire thing hadn’t crystallized into a solid concept yet and that’s how they ended up here.
(Fun fact: This old post contains an extremely early version of these lyrics that weren’t even fleshed out yet.)
Lyrics
Standing near the frontlines
Dress rehearsal, slicked back and so refined
While controversial
Taking in the undersigned
Hope springs eternal
Living in this pipe dream
Nothing happened, splitting off at the seams
Some more retractions
Only trying to be redeemed
We’re always lashing out
It’s hanging low in the air
It’s hanging low in the air
Building up some thick skin
Dense and wealthy, no one cares where they’ve been
It’s not compelling
Those plastic smile charlatans
Still seem unhealthy
Waking in a cold sweat
Doesn’t matter, dancing like marionettes
We’ll watch them scatter
No one sees the sunlight yet
Who’s really sadder now?
It’s hanging low in the air
It’s hanging low in the air
It’s hanging low in the air
We’ve gotta get out of here
Frozen stiff from years of disbelief
No one understands what this shit means
Calling out those voices yet unseen
No one understands what it all means
No one understands what it all means
It’s hanging low in the air
It’s hanging low in the air
It’s hanging low in the air
We’ve gotta get out of here
Gotta get out of here
We’ve gotta get out of here
Gotta get out of here
